Honoring God’s Design: Celebrating Women on International Women’s Day

God created women so that man would not be alone. As stated in Genesis 2:18, “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’” Eve was formed from Adam’s rib (Genesis 2:21-22) to be his companion and wife, working alongside him to build a family (Genesis 1:22, 9:7). They were meant to be partners. However, after succumbing to the serpent’s temptation in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world, disrupting God’s perfect design. Over time, the roles of men and women have been distorted, leading to inequality despite the Bible (Genesis 1:26-28), the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution affirming their equal value.

History reminds us of the relentless efforts of suffragists who fought for women’s right to vote. Their perseverance paid off, but the movement didn’t stop there. International Women’s Day traces back to March 19, 1911, when over one million people across Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland rallied for women’s rights, including the right to vote, workplace equality, and political representation. In 1977, the United Nations officially recognized International Women’s Day, strengthening the global push for gender equality. This year, it will be observed on Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Today, women contribute in every sphere of society—some leading in professional fields, others dedicating themselves to full-time motherhood. God has given each of us unique gifts and callings, allowing us to express them in different ways. As Christians, our ultimate goal is to use these gifts for His glory.

Yet, in the 21st century, the conversation around women’s rights has resurfaced, particularly regarding the biblical, genetic, and biological distinctions between men and women. As cultural debates blur the definition of womanhood, International Women’s Day serves as a reminder that while men and women are uniquely designed, they share equal worth. This is a truth we should stand together in, affirming that God created women as His beloved daughters.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to embrace and celebrate womanhood while giving thanks to God for creating us in His image (Genesis 1:27). Here are four meaningful ways Christians and churches can honor this day. Choose one to implement this year and keep this list for future inspiration. Or, if you have your own ideas, put them into action to recognize and uplift the women in your life.
